Sean Wainui

Sean Wainui – a member of the Ngai Tuhoe and Ngati Porou Taranaki iwi – joins the Maori All Blacks for the first time in 2015, fresh out of the New Zealand Under 20 team which won the World Championship title in Italy in June.

He had to work harder than most to earn his black jersey, after spending 11 weeks over the summer in a cast after being diagnosed with a stress fracture in his foot. After missing the Under 20 training camps and trials, he was a late call-up to the squad, but hit the ground running with two tries from the wing in an electric performance against Japan in the Oceania Cup. He followed that with a crucial try against Argentina in the second World Championship pool match.

The former Takapuna Grammar first XV captain impressed Maori All Blacks coach Colin Cooper with his performances for New Plymouth Old Boys in his first season out of school in 2014, earning selection for Taranaki’s ITM Cup Premiership winning side as well as the Chiefs development team.
